Electric vehicles had all but disappeared by 1935. The years following
until the 1960s were dead years for electric vehicle development and for
use as personal transportation.
The 1960s and 1970s saw a need for alternative fueled vehicles to reduce the problems of exhaust emissions
from internal combustion engines and to reduce the dependency on
imported foreign crude oil.
Many attempts to produce practical electric vehicles occurred during
the years from 1960 to the present.
In the early 1960s, the Boyertown
Auto Body Works jointly formed the Battronic Truck Company with
Smith Delivery Vehicles, of England and the Exide Division of the
Electric Battery Company. The first Battronic electric truck was
delivered to the Potomac Edison Company in 1964. This truck was
capable of speeds of 25 mph, a range of 62 miles and a payload of
2,500 pounds.
Smith Electric Vehicles is a manufacturer of electric delivery vans based
in the UK. They are now part of the Tanfield Group.
They were established in the early 20th century building milk floats and
bread vans. Their most known milk floats are of their Cabac design
which later, after a facelift, became known as the Elizabethan.
They also made coal trucks and vegetable stalls, many of which were
later converted into milk floats.
Contrary to popular belief they still construct their Elizabethan design.
In the early 90s doorstep delivery of milk started to dwindle and half of
all milk rounds stopped in the next decade. Smith were worried about
the business and developed the Newton range of Electric delivery vans.
They can go up to 50mph and travel around 150 miles between charges.
Sainsbury's alone are taking over 1000, so the business was saved for at
least another 5 years.
With all the reports of Global Warming, it is a wonder how we have
survived this long. It is a shame that we as a race have become so
farsighted when it comes to the health and stability of our environment.
We all need to do our part to conserve what little natural resources we
have left, while at the same time being more earth friendly conscious.
If lawmakers would stop playing to the hands of lobbyists and honor
their election pledges, we would be a lot better off as a planet.
What little thing we can do as part of our obligation to preserve this
planet is to get away from the gas guzzling monsters the not only use too
much of our natural resources, but also are heavy contributors to the
eradication of the protective layer called the O Zone layer.
