The terms online and offline have specific meanings with respect to computer technology and telecommunication. In general, online indicates a state of connectivity, while offline indicates a disconnected state. Online often refers to the Internet or the World Wide Web.
The concepts have been extended from their computing and telecommunication meanings into the area of human interaction and conversation, such that even offline can be used in contrast to the common usage of online.
Another usage runs contrary to the expected meaning offline as from an online source. The amount and type of information ranged from theories, species, experiments, research, and various other forms of knowledge. It was not until the first century bce when they started organizing each and every scroll to form a dictionary of scientific knowledge.
The dictionaries were ordered from most important to least important by Chinese standards, and reached up to 8,000 entries long. A multi field dictionary broadly covers several subject fields, a single-field dictionary narrowly covers one particular subject field, and a subfield dictionary covers a singular field. The 23 language Inter Active Terminology for Europe is a multi field dictionary, the American National Biography is a single field, is a sub field dictionary.
In terms of the above coverage distinction between minimizing dictionaries and maximizing dictionaries, multi field dictionaries tend to minimize coverage across subject fields whereas single field and subfield dictionaries tend to maximize coverage within a limited subject field.
