A hyperbole is a figure of speech used in the English language. The word hyperbole has its origin in the Greek language and means excess or exaggeration.
By definition, a hyperbole is nothing but a trope composed of exaggerated words or ideals used for emphasis. Also described as the implied simile, hyperbole is a figure of speech in which statements are exaggerated to create an impact and are not supposed to be interpreted literally.
Hyperboles are commonly used in prose as well as poetry. Although valued in creative writing, hyperboles are avoided in formal writing or business writing.
Examples of Hyperbole can be found in many examples of the poem, poems or poetry. Famous poets use this figure of speech to convey and emphasize unusual and vivid images. The use of strong word association changes the mode of thought and adds variation, embellishment and adornment to literary works.
In figurative language we use words in such a way that they differ somewhat from ordinary every day speech and convey meanings in a more vivid and impressive manner. Figures, like hyperbole make speech more effective, they beautify and emphasize it in rhetoric which is the art of speaking and writing effectively. Figures of speech such as hyperbole use word association to convey emotion and mood often in a non literal sense.
The ability to communicate with words is one thing that sets apart man from all other creatures. Figures of speech add emphasis and feeling to what we say and write. When we recognize the figures of speech we are able to more fully enjoy the richness of the Word, and also learn much more truth from it.
It is important that we become at least somewhat familiar with the figures of speech in Scripture, of which there are more than 200 varieties.
